Organic versus paid social marketing

You will learn to: Choose when earned attention and paid distribution can support an objective.

Two ways to distribute, one customer experience

Organic content is distributed without buying the individual placement. It still costs staff time, production effort and attention. Paid social buys access to advertising distribution under a platform’s rules. It can offer targeting, budget controls and campaign measurement, but it does not guarantee that the audience will care or that the offer will convert.

Different jobs can complement each other

Organic activity can answer questions, demonstrate expertise and build familiarity. Paid activity can test an offer with a defined audience or extend distribution beyond existing followers. A visitor arriving from an advert may check the business’s organic profile before enquiring. Both routes need accurate information, a useful landing page and a credible next step.

Why it matters

Promoting a weak offer can increase spending without solving the underlying problem. Before buying distribution, check the intended audience, the message, the destination and how success will be measured. Include production and follow-up costs in your judgement. If enquiries cannot be answered promptly, additional traffic may make the customer experience worse.

Start with a bounded question

For a first paid test, define the question, budget limit, timeframe and stop condition before launch. Decide what would count as a suitable lead and how you will record outcomes. Platform-reported conversions may use different attribution windows from your own records. Review both, without automatically treating attributed conversions as incremental sales caused by the advert.

MAKE IT CONCRETE

Worked examples

Useful organic work

A retailer explains how to choose the right size and responds to fit questions. This can reduce uncertainty for both new and returning customers.

A possible paid test

A local class provider tests a clearly described introductory session within its service area. It tracks completed bookings and attendance, not just cheap clicks. The budget and audience are decisions for its advertising account.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Calling organic marketing free while ignoring production time.
  • Boosting every post without defining the desired result.
  • Assuming a good organic result predicts the same paid result with a different audience.

What changes across channels?

Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok and X have distinct advertising products, eligibility and policies. An SMR posting connection is not an advertising account or permission to run adverts. Manage paid campaigns in the relevant advertising tools; SMR Uni does not purchase distribution.
